Ganzlederband des 17./18. Jahrhunderts mit ornamentalem und floralem goldgeprägtem Deckel, und Rückenschmuck. Phaedrus (Gaius Iulius Phaedrus), geboren um 20/15 v. Chr. angeblich in Katerini, gestorben um 50/60 n. Chr. Römischer Fabeldichter in den Regierungszeiten der Kaiser Augustus, Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius und Nerodessen Fabeln dann unter dem Namen Aesop im Umlauf waren.
Erste illustrierte Ausgabe von Phaedrus, die in den Niederlanden veröffentlicht wurde und erste Ausgabe, herausgegeben von Laurentius. Enthält den Text von 92 Phaedrus-Fabeln mit umfangreichen Anmerkungen (die erste Ausgabe von 1596 hatte nur 64 Fabeln). Mit 102 (von 103 Kupfern) im Text, die meist 1/4 oder 1/3 des Blattes einnehmen. Im vorliegenden Exemplar wurden die zwei Blätter der Seiten 275/276 und 277/278 entfernt. Das Entfernen von dem auch Landwehr berichtet, diente dazu, die ‚Bordellszene auf Seite 276, die eine orgiastische Szene darstellt‘ zu zensieren, unkenntlich zu machen oder (wie beim vorliegenden Exemplar) zu entfernen. Mit dem gestochenen Titelblatt von Christian Hagens. Titel und letztes Blatt mit kleinem Bibliotheksstempel der „Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, Duplicato“ und einem weiteren Blindstempel. Einband berieben, Kupfer in kräftigem Druck. Abgesehen vom Fehlen der zwei Blätter gutes bis sehr gutes Exemplar der hervorragengen Provenienz.
First illustrated edition of Phaedrus published in the Netherlands and first edition published by Laurentius. Contains the text of 92 Phaedrus fables with extensive annotations (the first edition of 1596 had only 64 fables). With 102 (of 103 coppers) in the text, which usually take up 1/4 or 1/3 of the sheet. In the present copy, the two sheets on pages 275/276 and 277/278 have been removed. The removal, which Landwehr also reports, served to censor the ‚brothel scene depicting an orgiastic scene on page 276‘, to make it unrecognizable or to remove it (as with the present copy). Rubbed cover, copper engravings in strong pressure. Apart from the lack of the two sheets, a good to very good copy of excellent provenance.
