English short title catalogue, T2314. Je mit Frontispiz und gestochenem Titelblatt sowie allen insgesamt 86 Kupfertafeln (im ersten Band 51, im zweiten Band 35) sowie jeweils der gestochenen Schlussvignette. Illustrationen nach William Hogarth von Barlow, Dent und Corbould. Ein dritter Band erschien erstmals 1789 unter dem Titel ‚A supplement to Hogarth illustrated‘. Im ersten Band wurde abweichend als Fronstipiz die Tafel „Time smoking a Picture“ eingebunden, das Portrait John Irelands stattdessen im zweiten Band als Frontispiz verwendet. Die Graphik „The Bathos“ im zweiten Band vor Seite 589 eingebunden (statt vor Seite 595). Im zweiten Band gilt das gestochene Titelblatt als Substitut für die Tafel zu Seite 506. Einbände berieben und am Rücken etwas knickspurig, jeweils auf Vorsatz Exlibris mit gelöschtem Namen, Name in Tinte von alter Hand auf Titelblatt bzw. erster Seite, Seiten und Tafeln vorwiegend nur leicht gebräunt, stellenweise jedoch stockfleckig, die Tafel „Moses before Pharaoh’s daughter“ mit Randeinriss (ohne Bildberührung), sehr vereinzelt Seiten mit minimaler Randfehlstelle im Fußsteg. Gutes bis sehr gutes Exemplar. Gilt-stamped, contemporary red leather binding with gilt edges. First volume with frontispiece (Time smoking a Picture), engraved title page, 51 further plates, tailpiece vignette, second volume with engraved frontispiece (portrait of John Ireland), engraved title page, 35 further plates and tailpiece vignette. Illustrations by Barlow, Dent and Corbould, after William Hogarth. Vol. 3 appeared in 1798 entitled ‚A supplement to Hogarth illustrated‘. Plate „Time smoking a Picture“ used in volume 1 as frontispiece. The portrait of John Ireland decorates volume 2 as frontispiece instead. „The bathos“ follows page 588 (instead of 594). The engraved title page in volume two is meant as a substitute for the plate „Boys peeping at nature“ (p. 506). Covers rubbed and spines with slight crease marks, exlibris with deleted previous owner’s name, name in old handwriting on title page resp. on first text page, pages and plates only marginally darkened but partially with foxing, plate „Moses before Pharaoh’s daughter“ with small tear (without picture loss), very few pages with small defects to lower white line. Near fine copy.
