Leather binding of the time with gilt lettering to the spine, gilt fillet decoration to the turn-ins, blind-tooled floral decoration, and red sprinkled edges. Slightly later edition. Cf. Brunet IV, 495. Antonio Pérez (c. 1540–1611), Secretary of State to Philip II of Spain, fell from favour with the king following the murder of Juan de Escobedo in 1578 and was first arrested in 1579. After years in captivity, he escaped to Aragon in 1590 and subsequently to France in 1591. His writings combine personal vindication, political reflection, and a polemical account of events at the court of Philip II. Binding lightly rubbed and a bit scuffed in places, corners partly bumped. Endpapers and the first and last pages slightly affected by glue staining; pages only lightly toned. Good to very good copy.
