Syntax with the Skimmington Riders“.
Leather bindings of the time with geometric gilt decoration to the spines, gilt spine titles on black leather labels, gilt fillet borders to the boards, board edges and turn-ins, marbled endpapers and marbled edges. Mixed edition (vol. 1: fifth edition with new printing plates; vols. 2 and 3: first editions). English-language edition. Tooley 427-429. With a total of 78 hand-coloured aquatint plates (including frontispieces), 2 hand-coloured aquatint title vignettes and a woodcut vignette. This issue with the chapters headed „Canto“ instead of „Chapter“. In addition, vol. 1 with the variant of plate 5 (″Doctor Syntax bound to a tree by highwaymen“, after p. 14), in which the girl’s raised arm is slightly bent. In vol. 2, plate 15 with the title variant „Dr. Syntax with the Skimmington Riders“. Bindings somewhat rubbed and bumped. Spines and outer joints reglued. Inner joints reinforced with leather strips. Spine of vol. 3 renewed in plain leather. Endpapers slightly rubbed and creased, the missing corner of the flyleaf in vol. 1 crudely replaced with printed marbled paper. Pages slightly darkened overall and with occasional light staining. One page with a small marginal tear (approx. 1.5 cm, not affecting the text), another with darkened finger marks. Plates with faint offsetting onto the facing pages; the illustrations themselves are bright and clear. Overall a good to very good copy.
